faq
these fire gems look small - do they REALLY work?
yes! we use fire gems while making a fire in the backyard, the fireplace, using a solo stove, and camping! don’t let their small size fool you - one gem is almost always enough to get your fire going! you can add gems as needed for very large fires, or especially wet conditions.
what are fire gems made of?
our fire gems are made with a beeswax base, and botanicals like rosemary, sage, lavender, and even eucalyptus we grow ourselves, in our chemical and pesticide free community garden, the spring gardens, located in the fairmount / spring garden neighborhood. their color comes from the botanicals, along with naturally-derived dyes and a touch of ethically-sourced mica. occasionally, we use some bio-glitter, as well, which is made from plant cellulose and burns cleanly to ash. we do not use plastic components in anything we make. if you have any specific questions about our approach and materials, please do not hesitate to email us!
what inspired you to make fire gems?
as avid campers, hikers and nature lovers, we love a peaceful evening around the fire - but hated all the plastic accelerant bottles we found at campsites! we knew there had to be a better way.
inspired by memories of our grandmothers lighting fireplace fires with the ends of candles, we took this concept and poured it into a modern form: fire gems! these gems are zero-waste, plastic + petroleum free, and can be safely and easily transported in your pack or pocket without worry. they’re also safer to use around kids and pets, which is always a plus.
do you create custom gems for weddings, events, and hospitality venues?
yes! we’ve created customized fire gems for: weddings, parties + gatherings, homes, hotels, luxury rental properties - and more! we have experience working with clients to match gem colors + aesthetics to existing branding standards, as well as creating a unique collections that surprise and delight.
we’d love to hear more about your specific needs and vision - fill out the form below to start a conversation!
where do you source your garlands’ pinecones + acorns?
our pinecones + acorns are all natural - we use no plastic components. our pinecones are sourced from the oceanside forests of long beach island. we only take cones from trees that have died from old age or lightening strikes - never living trees, which host a unique ecosystem. our acorns are sourced from local trees. only a small number of acorns are ever taken from each tree, so there are plenty for the squirrels.
where and how do you grow the botanicals used in your gems?
all the botanicals used in our creations are grown in our chemical-free community garden, the spring gardens. we use only locally-made compost from bennett compost in our garden - never any chemicals or pesticides (yuck).
through a combination of plant selection, ola pots, and innovative ground cover - pinecones! - we’ve significantly reduced water usage, and only have to water our garden occasionally throughout the summer.
we are adamantly no-till - meaning, we do not till the soil and disturb the earthworms and other creatures that live underground.
by including pinecones, sticks, and a variety of other natural elements, our garden is a wild jungle, home to countless spiders, and a refuge for local pollinators. we are exceptionally careful when harvesting plants to not disturb any cocoons or hibernating creatures.
what is your sustainability policy?
less is more, natural is best - and compost everything you can! we use bennett compost for our composting throughout the year. other steps we take to minimize our impact include:
sourcing locally as often as possible
sourcing ethically, taking into consideration impact on both people and planet
growing our botanicals locally, and chemical free
opting for low-impact packaging that can be recycled, and in many cases composted or burned
why “låga?” what does it mean?
låga is swedish, and means light or blaze. it comes from ancient roots shared across many other european languages, from the icelandic logi to the middle high german lohe. light brings us together. it always has.
we chose låga specifically because it’s fun to say, and let’s face it: it’s a cool looking word. the first time we heard it it felt right, and we’ve stuck with it ever since.
