our sage & smkstx

When something cool becomes popular, that’s great. But, when that “something popular” is a natural resource, it often doesn’t turn out so well. This is the case when it comes to sage, specifically white sage. The concept of “sageing” or “smudging” your space has become mainstream, and sage products are now sold in major stores like urbn, amazon, walmart - it’s become a part of everyone’s everything.

So . . . where is everyone suddenly getting all this sage? Great question. Long story short, while there are ethical producers across the market, there are also a lot of unethical producers. And unethical people, who collect white sage from public lands and native lands. As a result, like so many fads in the wellness economy, this one has been tarnished by controversy and criminality.

Our approach is a little different: we don’t “source” our sage (or the other herbs we use) - we grow them ourselves at our local community garden.
•••

We top off our plot with locally-sourced and made compost from our friends at Bennett Compost, and a periodic wash down with worm compost tea (also from Bennett) throughout the season’s hottest weeks. And that’s it. You’ll notice that some leaves may have a hole or two, or maybe a nibble off the edge. Consider it proof that we live by our word.

Our smkstx are also a little different from what you’ve probably seen in the past: we wrap each herbal bundle with sage leaves. This wrapping technique creates a slow, consistent burn. AKA you can * actually * smell each each botanical in our blends: rosemary, lavender, rose petals, russian sage - among other seasonal favorites. Whether you’re seeking a higher truth or just a relaxing pause, the aromas will awaken your senses, pulling you back to the present moment and the pursuit of harmony.

As wanderers and wonderers, we invite you to create your own experience. There is no prescribed way to enjoy - other than safely. As always, never leave something burning or smoldering unattended, and make sure that there are no lit embers before discarding ashes - hopefully into your compost bin. ;) We love using large shells to hold these sticks as they smolder - and while you can totally get ours, we’d encourage you to find your own. A small something simple, both common and beautiful. A totem to where you’ve been and the moments worth remembering.
